*Friday the 13th Spoiler warning*
Fall is the perfect season, the chilly weather, the pumpkin spice, but most of all, there is halloween. Halloween is the time where horror movies and spooky vibes arise and anyone can dress up however they want or as whoever they want. To get geared for the spooky season, here is a list of my top 10 horror movies to watch.
Number 1: Scream (1996)
“Scream” is one of the top ranked horror movies of all time. This movie was under the direction of none other than Wes Craven. The story follows a young girl named Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), whose mother was killed last year. It was the ¨hottest court case¨ in this film according to journalist and ¨top story¨ news reporter, Gale Weathers. This film is set in the small town of Woodsboro, CA, where a serial killer starts targeting Sidney. He makes frightening phone calls stalking his victims, and once he gets them on edge, that’s when he strikes to kill. This is a MUST see if you love scary movies.
Number 2: Halloween (1978)
“Halloween” is the film that introduced the infamous Michael Myers. This movie introduces the film’s final girl, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis). Michael Myers stalks Laurie while she is babysitting and attacks her and her friend Annie. Michael Meyers had been imprisoned for years after murdering his sister at 12 years old. He had escaped prison and targeted Laurie and her friend Annie, who were young girls in high school. If you have a lust for a spooky vibe and love fall this is highly recommended for you.
Number 3: A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)
“A Nightmare on Elm Street” was a film again directed by Wes Craven, a famous horror movie director who was known for making iconic films. This one was a hit. The film follows young Nancy Thompson whose dreams are haunted by Freddy Krueger who tries to murder teens in their sleep. Freddy Kruger has knives for fingers and slices his victims in their sleep. This movie is absolutely frightening and gory. I recommend this to be your first horror film to get a taste of the horror genre.
Number 4: Friday the 13th (1980)
“Friday the 13th” is the film that also introduced an infamous serial killer, Pamela Voorhees. However, in the 2nd film the killer was her son Jason Voorhees, who is more well known for the film’s murderer. This creepy film takes place in Camp Crystal Lake, an eerie haunted camp. The killer stalks young camp counselors and aims to kill them. This movie made me crawl out of my own skin! It was so frightening and unbelievably creepy. I recommend this film if you have a lust for terror…
Number 5: The Black Phone (2022)
This film introduces a brand new sadistic killer who hides behind a mask just like the other 4 films already mentioned. He kidnaps young boys from the streets in broad daylight, and leaves black balloons behind as a mark. He then traps them in a soundproof basement. All of his past victims had been found mutilated by him, however, when a smart boy named Finney Blake falls for his sadistic trap, he finds a black phone which he can communicate with the dead victims through the phone. The victims give Finney hints and tips on how to escape. I recommend this if you love psychological horror.
Number 6: The Shining (1980)
This film is known to be a CLASSIC. “The Shining” was under the direction of none other than Stanley Kubrick, and was based off of the famous Stephen King novel. This horror production is known as one of the most terrifying films of all time. This movie follows married couple Jack and Wendy Torrance and their son Danny Torrance. Jack agrees to be the winter caretaker at the overlook hotel. Jack is a former teacher, and used to be an alcoholic. He now is a writer and takes the job at the haunted hotel with his family over the winter. The son, Danny has a power he is unaware of until a worker at the hotel has the same power. This film is highly recommended if you have a lust for scary films.
Number 7: The Conjuring (2013)
“The conjuring” has multiple connections to horror movies such as “The Nun” and “Annabelle”. The conjuring follows a story about a family who moves into a creepy abandoned haunted house, yet they are not aware of the house’s demons and powers that will possess the small family. If you enjoyed The Exorcist you will likely enjoy this.
Number 8: The Exorcist (1973)
Speaking of being possessed by demons in a haunted house, “The Exorcist” was released in 1973 and became an iconic film over the years since its release. “The Exorcist” is a supernatural horror film that was under the direction of William Friedkin. The story follows a young girl and her mother. When the young girl, Regan MacNeil gets possessed, her and the mother endeavor an exorcism with two catholic priests. If you have a specific taste for supernatural films, I highly recommend this iconic horror movie.
Number 9: Poltergeist (1982)
“Poltergeist” is another supernatural horror movie. This film was released in 1982 and is iconic and known for well known lines such as ¨they’re heeere…¨ This film follows a family with a young girl, Carol Anne who gets possessed by a supernatural force that haunts and lingers around the house, targeting Carol Anne and the rest of the family that moved into the house. If you loved the past two films I mentioned (The exorcist and the conjuring), watch this one.
Number 10: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” introduces the infamous villain, Leatherface. Leatherface is based off of the famous serial killer, Ed Gein. “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” follows a group of young adults as they travel to Texas where there is a grave robber stealing the remains of corpses in their graves. The young group of people face the terror and horror of this small town in Texas and fight for their lives against the reign of terror against Leatherface. I recommend this film if you love slasher films such as “Friday the 13th” (1980) or “Pearl” (2022).
This concludes the list of Top 10 horror movies recommended to watch this fall. I really enjoy slasher, psychological, and supernatural horror films and hope you take these movies into consideration and enjoy watching them as much as I do. These days it’s all about the gore and terror rates in these films, so I highly recommend slashers. What is your favorite scary movie?
