Finding the right book can be difficult especially with all the choices from which to pick. However, books with an engaging plot or relatable characters, can make reading all the more exciting. Fast-paced and easy reads are books new readers might devour because they provide more entertainment and offer more chances for reading success.
Library media specialist, Mrs. Elizabeth Starnes, proposed that students start searching for a book by their interest. “I wouldn’t recommend any one book. I would ask the student about their interests and…take it from there.” Not all books students peruse will be the right choice for them. That’s why, when establishing the habit of reading, keeping track of books read and whether they were liked or not is helpful for the future.
According to Mrs. Starnes, in 2022, Contagion by Teri Terry was the book most frequently checked out of Crofton High Schools library. Goodreads provides the following description for Contagion: “Callie is missing. Her brother Kai is losing hope of ever seeing her again. Then he meets Shay, a girl who saw Callie the day she disappeared, and his hope is reignited. Their search leads them to the heart of a terrifying epidemic that is raging through the country.” A review from Chain Interaction Book Blog, proves “if you like your books fast-paced, I…suggest reading this.”
Not all readers will enjoy thrillers. If readers want a rom-com that’s easier to read, check out the book, Tweet Cute by Emma Lord. According to Jenn Bennett, author of Alex, Approximately, and Serious Moonlight, Tweet Cute is “An adorable debut that updates a classic romance trop with a buzzy twist.” Pepper is a chronic overachiever and a perfectionist. While having to tolerate her sister and mother’s fights, her mother and father’s ginormous food chain, Big League Burger, is increasing in popularity. Jack however, is a class clown and rivals with Pepper. What happens when BLB starts a feud for stealing a recipe? What will Pepper do if she has more fun with Jack than she thought she would? If students prefer simple and cute reads, Tweet Cute is an amazing quick weekend read.
Freshman student at Crofton High School, Alexis Almonte mentioned, “one of my favorite books that I have read quite recently is The Bridge by Bill Konigsberg.” This book deals with teenage mental health issues. This is an example of the variety of books students can find interesting. It’s important to consider all kinds of genres to experience the freedom to explore that comes with reading. Expanding one’s horizons is the most important step when starting to read. Once that happens, the world of reading becomes a vast expansion of imagination and knowledge.
