2024 has been a terrific year for the film lovers. Movies like Deadpool & Wolverine, Inside Out 2, Despicable Me 4, and Dune: Part Two have already graced the screens and hit big at the box office. Inside Out 2, directed by Kelsey Man, was the top winner so far amassing over $1.6 billion worldwide. However there are still 3 months in the year with several movies that could take the top spot for highest grossing film of 2024. Here are a few highly anticipated films coming out in the remainder of 2024.
First on the list and coming out in only 2 weeks is Joker: Folie à Deux directed by Todd Phillips. This is a sequel to the Oscar-winning 2019 film: Joker. The movie follows the Joker, played by Joaquin Phoenix, and Harley Quinn, played by Lady Gaga. The two fall in love while incarcerated. Not to mention, it’s a musical. But what else can you expect when it stars Lady Gaga?
Coming out next is the final Venom movie of the trilogy: Venom: The Last Dance. Directed by Kelly Marcel, the movie follows Eddie Brock/Venom, played by Tom Hardy. In the first movie, Eddie Brock is bonded with Venom, an alien entity, and they decide to protect the Earth. Venom is a part of the Marvel franchise and fantastic for any superhero lovers. Currently there is not much information on the film however it will come out on October 25th and will conclude Venom’s story.
On November 22, Gladiator will see its sequel after 24 years! Directed by Ridley Scott, the film follows a grown up Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, as he enters the Colosseum. After his home is conquered by tyrannical emperors, Lucius must look to his past to bring prestige back to the Roman people. The original Gladiator was such a success in the early 2000’s that we will have to see how Gladiator 2 performs.
On the same day as Gladiator 2, the highly awaited Wicked film will hit theaters. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the film brings the first act of the Tony-award winning musical to the silver screen. The film stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Galinda accompanied by Jonanthan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldman. The beloved Broadway musical and now film tells the story of the Wicked Witch of the West’s past leading up to meeting Dorothy from the hit movie, The Wizard of Oz.
The next release, Moana 2, will hit theaters on November 25. Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson will return to their previous roles of Moana and Maui in this sequel. Directed by Dave Derrick Jr., the story follows Moana as she receives an unexpected call from her ancestors and must voyage the seas with Maui and a new crew. This film will join the many Disney movies released in 2024 and is expected to be a box office hit.
Disney’s second release within these next months is Mufasa: The Lion King. The story is a sequel to the live-action film The Lion King, which was a box office hit in 2019. In the film, Simba, now king of the Pride Lands, tries to get his son to follow in his footsteps while the origins of Simba’s father, Mufasa, are explored. The film is set to hit theaters on December 20th.
Last but certainly not least is the highly anticipated Bob Dylan biographical film set to be released on Christmas. A Complete Unknown is directed by James Gold and stars Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan. The film tells the true story of 19-year-old Bob Dylan as he finds success in New York after growing up in Minnesota. Clips of Chalamet singing in the film are popular on social media and emulate Bob Dylan’s unique voice, exciting fans for what is to come.
