The Endless is a Fresh Take on Horror

Jaime Goldinger, Staff Writer

The Endless, 2017, is a sci-fi horror movie written, directed, and starring Justin Benson. The basic plot follows two brothers, Justin and Aaron, returning to a camp they were part of as young children after receiving a tape in the mail inviting them back.

While Justin calls the group a “UFO death cult” and is very hesitant about going back, Aaron wants to visit to reconnect to people they knew and get away from his life in the city. The rest of the movie focuses on the two brothers returning to the camp and the supernatural events that follow.

While most horror movies focus on the scares themselves, the endless focuses on the effects on the characters and how they interact with each other. This movie has more character interactions and development than typical in a horror movie, which gives the action a more slow burn grounded feel.

Over the course of the movie the audience gets a feel for each character and their relationships with one another, and because of that the world they’re in feels like it’s filled with real people and overall makes the movie feel fundamentally different to many other popular horror movies and will be refreshing to frequent horror movie watchers.

If you’re looking for something a little different to watch for Halloween or anytime really, I highly recommend this movie. This low-budget masterpiece might not be for everyone, but with a Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 92%, I think it’s worth your time.
