Women’s sports at Crofton High School are a major success for the school. Crofton High School is a newly established High School in Anne Arundel County, so knowing that may provide a better understanding of the sports opportunities to come with it. A new school provides new turf fields, gyms, and equipment.
So far, the sports communities have made sports at Crofton High School its strong point, specifically Women’s sports. Women’s Sports at Crofton High School have made a profound impact on the school’s reputation. These past 4 years of the school being open have been nothing short of success for Women’s-sports at CHS.
Women’s Soccer and Field Hockey are just two examples of success in Women’s Sports at Crofton High School. According to the only two banners for sports hung in the main gym, both Women’s Soccer and Field Hockey have made it to and won state championships in past years. This shows that Women’s Sports are a strong point for Crofton High School.
Crofton High School players express how they feel about team environments and interactions with other sports teams.
“I feel like there are some teams that look down on other teams, and that’s just not how it’s supposed to work. Because for instance the Baseball team always looks down on the Field Hockey team just because they play Field Hockey, even though we’re undefeated. Another unfair thing is that the Boys Soccer gets the stadium over the Girls Soccer. I don’t even play soccer but a lot of my friends that do play feel unappreciated because they are always put on the grass field instead of the actual field with an actual scoreboard and lines, it is so unfair. All of the teams need to work together to be a unified school of sports and athletics. The Crofton Field Hockey team has won state championships in the past and are on the track to winning counties and states this year. I think that we should get more recognition for that. They always advertise football and they never advertise the girls sports as much,” said freshman Caroline Smith, JV Field Hockey player.
“Working together and being nice to each other is important, and don’t start drama. If there’s drama, forget about it, leave it off the field,” said freshman Katie Simpson, JV Women’s Soccer Player.
And freshman Kennedy Evans, a JV Cheerleader, said that it was important “to feel comfortable with each other and having respect for each other, team bonding and being a good listener is important for a team environment.”
It is not out of the ordinary for women’s-sports teams to struggle to fight for equal resources, facilities, and respect compared to men’s teams. Women’s National Soccer teams have been advocating for equality for years. In 2022, the U.S Women’s Soccer team fought for equal pay from the U.S Soccer Federation. The players challenged inequality by advocating for their team, which had been more successful than the men’s team for years, but got paid less. Eventually they settled the equal pay lawsuit for $24 million, $22 million of which went directly to the players behind the suit. This was a turning point for U.S Soccer and how the Federation valued women’s and men’s teams and shows what can happen when someone speaks out against inequality.
