The 2024 Winter Cheer team at Crofton High School placed at their two previous competitions this season and placed second at the Maryland State 4A Division Cheerleading Competition yesterday.
The State Championship was February 27, at Harford Community College at 6 pm. Six teams competed against Crofton High School: Glen Burnie, Perry Hall, Broadneck, North County, Severna Park, And Tuscarora.
Junior Sadie Koppenhaver is a main base on the Crofton Cheer Team. She has been cheering on the High School team since freshman year. She started on Junior varsity for fall and winter season as a main flier and tumbler. Now, she is in her third year.
Koppenhaver talks about the team’s struggles when it comes to competing. “Glen Burnie is probably the team I’m most nervous about competing against,” she said. “In practice we struggle to perform like we have an audience, so when we compete it takes more energy to put on a show during competition that we haven’t practiced. There’s only 9 of us on the mat so we all have a job that we are constantly doing, so we strive and work ten times harder to fill the mat since there are less people.”
“I am most excited for the feeling after competing, and for my last competition with Senior main base Zoe Stratton. I look up to her and her hard work and spirit on our team,” she said.
Sophomore Maddey Wolfe is a side base on the Crofton Cheer team. Wolfe explains that “Coming together as one and pushing each other is definitely something our team excels in.” As Koppenhaver states, Wolfe also believes that “Glen Burnie is our hardest competitor.” “Letting nerves get to us too much is something we struggle with.”
January 25 at the Anne Arundel County, County Cheer Competition, Varsity placed second and Junior Varsity placed third. On February 7 at Harford Community College for the Regional Championship, the Varsity Cheer team walked away with a silver medal, only 1 behind Glen Burnie’s cheer team, which won gold.
To wrap up the season the Crofton High School Varsity cheer team placed second and walked away with a silver medal at the state championship in the 4A division. Glen Burnie placed above them and Perry Hall behind.
