On Saturday, October 19th, after an exciting season, Crofton High School’s Junior Varsity Volleyball Team, Varsity Field Hockey Team, and Junior Varsity Field Hockey Team secured a spot in the Anne Arundel County Championships.
The Girl’s JV Volleyball team played against Chesapeake, and after an intense game, they won two out of three of their sets. Even without their Varsity team alongside them, the JV team rose to the occasion and beat Chesapeake to come home as county champions.
“Counties went well and we won. I feel like I did well. One intense moment in the game was the second set because Chesapeake started to gain points and I feel everyone got nervous, but in the third set we remembered the stuff we worked on and we are now County Champions,” explained sophomore Kaylyn McMillan, JV Volleyball player.
In the field hockey county championships, Varsity Field Hockey faced Broadneck and JV Field Hockey faced Severna Park. Both teams were victorious, with a varsity win of 2-1 and a JV win of 2-0.
“Counties went really well, our team worked together really well and we won. I feel like it was one of the better games I’ve played in the season. An intense moment was when we had three or four defensive corners back to back. When we get a defensive corner it puts our team in a bad spot and allows for the other team to score,” said sophomore Izzy Fagiolo, JV Field Hockey captain.
“Counties went really well, from the warmup to the final seconds of the game our team brought all they could and left it out on the field. Personally, it was one of my best games defensively. Near the end of the game, it was very nerve-racking trying to get the ball to our scoring end. This county game was super important for many of the JV team because we lost to Severna Park in the previous year’s semi-finals. We really wanted to make a comeback against them. We were very happy to go to homecoming in a good mood and gain a new plaque for the school,” said sophomore Caroline Smith, JV Field Hockey player.
October 19th was not just an exciting day for Crofton High School Athletics, but also the day of Homecoming. The 2024 Homecoming dance took place at CrHS from 7-10 pm. Due to the County Championships ending later in the day, the athletes had an extra level of stress for the day, specifically volleyball, whose game ended two hours before the dance.
Despite the challenges and stresses that accompanied playing in the county championships, JV Volleyball and both Field Hockey teams earned wins for Crofton. The successes of Volleyball and Field Hockey are reflections of Crofton’s amazing sports program and a representation of success in women’s sports at CrHS. Crofton High School is proud that 2024 is another year to celebrate County Champs!
