*Spoiler warning*
The original 1996 “Scream” film kicked off the start of this bloodcurdling franchise, causing box offices for the rest of the movies to sell out quickly, especially Scream VI due to the phenomenal success of the past 5 installments. Director of the first four movies of this franchise was none other than the very well- renowned Wes Craven. Wes Craven had created other iconic horror movies such as, “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and Wes Cravens: “New Nightmare and The Hills Have Eyes”. Sadly Wes Craven passed away in 2015, therefore the directors of “Scream VI” were Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. These two were also the directors of the 5th installment, “Scream” (2022). The actors starring in the original film were Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquitte, Skeet Ulrich, Matthew Lillard and Rose McGowan.
The premise of these films is that a creepy stalker is watching his victims wearing a ghostface costume, originally known as ¨Father Death¨. He starts off by making a skin crawling phone call to the victim, setting his target on them, and when he finally gets them on edge, he strikes to kill. The other important part to this movie is that the killer is always someone you know, and the motive is always related to the past.
“Scream VI” was released on March 10th, 2023 starring Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Courtney Cox, Hayden Panettiere and Jasmin Savoy Brown. “Scream VI” recalls back to the fifth installment focusing on the survivors from the last film, otherwise known as ¨The Core Four¨. The main character in this film is Sam Carpenter. She is the daughter of none other than Billy Loomis, the infamous mastermind behind ghostface from the original 1996 “Scream”. She is also Tara Carpenter’s older sister. The two sisters were brutally attacked and targeted in the last film and survived along with Mindy and Chad Meeks Martin.
In my opinion, this is the best horror film made in the past year. Rotten tomatoes rated “Scream VI” at 76% out of 308 votes. The movie brought another level of fear, terror and gore. What set this film apart from previous films in the franchise, was that the kills were unbelievably gory and introduced ghostface using a shotgun as opposed to a knife on his victims. I enjoyed the shrine of all of the Scream Franchise artifacts and aspects. It really made my skin crawl seeing the old beaten up mask and how the new ghostface would use the old masks. If you really enjoy scary movies and love a thrill for the kill, I highly recommend this film.
